Landscape Photography White Balance

One of the most important stages of converting your RAW landscape photograph in software such as Lightroom is determining your white balance.  The white balance you choose determines the colours in your image.  Think of it as the foundation of all your colour work that follows - saturation, hue etc.

My own experience as a landscape photographer has taught me that, during the golden hour and onwards into dusk, the camera's automatic white balance struggles to find a useable white balance.  It often leaves the image with a very strong colour cast, typically cool in tone ...

Whiterocks Beach, Northern Ireland

I am proud to say that I have never deliberately picked up my camera and headed out into the landscape with the intention of copying someone else's photograph.  To most of you out there that would seem to be a bit of a given, but unfortunately the world of landscape photography, and indeed of art, is littered with many 'copiers,' who, devoid of their own inspiration and ability to compose images, set out with the intention of replicating someone else's work.  It should be noted, however, that it is possible to visit a location and spot a composition that is so obvious that is is unavoidable that it will be replicated countless times.  In a world in which 'everyone' owns a camera this is especially true ...

Whitestrand Bay, Inishowen, Ireland

Inishowen, which lies in the north-west of Ireland, is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire country.  The coastline is particularly special and contains unique coves and bays the like of which I cannot imagine would be found elsewhere.  Whitestrand, shown above, is one such bay .....

Lee Filters 'Super Stopper' Preview

It has been announced that Lee filters have released a new Super Stopper 15 stop neutral density filter.  The press release outlines a rather dramatic example of the strength of the filter, highlighting that an unfiltered exposure of 2 seconds will become a 17 hour exposure with the filter.  However, reading a little deeper one can see that the Lee Super Stopper is really designed for landscape photography during the brightest parts of the day.  An unfiltered exposure of 1/250s would yield a filtered exposure length of 2 minutes .....
